Violet sat in my lap as the youngest while the sisters sat to either side. The pilot and co-pilot put up a privacy screen and I activated my small disruptor so they couldn’t listen in. After all, the things we talked about weren’t for everyone’s ears. A faint scent of burnt fuel, to which I was mostly used by now, hit my nostrils and announced the afterburners were flaring up.

“Here,” I said just before we lift off and infused the area with soul power. It would prevent us from stumbling, bumping, and even the feeling we were up in the air. “I hope you’ll be flying with me again next time.”

“You can bet your ass we will!” Torment snickered as she planted her lips on mine. Malice followed up and pulled my face to look the other way.

“You girls are mean!” Violet protested. “But let me tell you something, I won our bet, so stick it up your ass!”

“Really? You’re still going on about that? As if we care,” Torment laughed. “What we care about, is him giving us the right to run our own business and expand our influence. Isn’t that right, sis?”

“Which wouldn’t have been possible without my fire manipulation and distillation.”

“Yeah, Tor, give credit where due. As we promised, this is a joint project shared between the three of us.”

“I know, I know. Come on, I’m just teasing her a bit, alright?”

“Which is good and all as long as you girls don’t push it too far. I don’t want bad blood and hurt feelings. The five of us are a unity,” I chimed in. I had to admit that Violet’s involvement and importance in their business project was something that made me very happy. She was steadily growing and with the proper support, she would keep growing into a strong woman. However, I could feel that there was something off between them, but I couldn’t come up with what.

“Say, can you promise us something?” Malice asked after a while. Her face seemed haunted and she wouldn’t meet my gaze.

“What is it?” I asked, worried I might have said something earlier.

“Come back alive, alright? You need to promise because your promise means that you’ll do anything to get back to us, even murder Sluszian babies.”

She was right. I would do anything if I made such a promise, which made me feel quite uncomfortable. I got to see, or at least hear about the Sluszians, in a new light. Still, my girls and my kids made me only steel my nerves even more and do as she asked.

“I promise, Malice, Torment, Violet. I will do anything in my power to come back alive and well. To all of you.”

None of them gave me a reply or even spoke. They went silent and snuggled up to me. This just went to show how there was one thing that kept them from falling apart and sticking together: me. I was someone who didn’t care as much about his own safety or life in general, but that would have to change.
